I will be honest with you. Water, by itself, is not one of my favorite drinks. But there are many benefits of plain water.
I crave “taste” . And if water has a taste without anything added to it, it’s probably bad!
For years I didn’t drink enough water and was filling up on sugary foods, sugary drinks and fake sugar. None of this is good-none of this makes you feel better in the long run.
When we moved to Arizona, I knew I really had to make some changes with how much plain water I would drink. I was still suffering for stomach issues, headaches and feeling cranky by midday. The Arizona dry weather depletes you of water so quickly, especially in the heat.
I tried a few things to help myself drink more water-and they are actually very simple and help me immensely.
- I got a fun cup with a reusable straw. There is something about sipping water through a straw that just makes it easier for me to get through the water more efficiently that a water bottle with a top. I don’t know why, but it feels more refreshing.
- I put in a ton of ice. I really like cold, plain water the best. The warmer the water is, the more I feel icky about it. The plain water with ice feels cooling and refreshing.
- I put in a fruit slice. While it may add a calorie or two, a little bit of flavor really helps me drink it down more.
- If I put in a fruit slice, I often freeze it! So, it doubles as an ice cube and a flavor maker. One of my favorite things to freeze is pineapple and mint. It almost takes like an alcoholic drink without any alcohol. The only problem with the mint is that it occasionally comes through the straw. However, the flavor is not too subtle, even though it has been frozen!
Drinking water is a simple and easy way to make yourself feel better, eat less, and have more energy. While there are so many different diet products on the market, a simple glass of water can been the easiest to obtain and a great, cheap habit to keep!
