I am quite a few years past pregnancy, but I see the things that I indulged in while pregnant as my kids favorite foods. Doctors will tell you that eating well during pregnancy can help your child immensely. However, it is not always possible to control the nutrition a child got while in utero (especially if the child was adopted!).
When I was growing up, I ate a lot of junk food. My parents liked junk food, we had it available and it was always available. I constantly overate during middle school and was a pretty tubby 12 year old. And I hated it. I wanted a better lifestyle and asked my parents if we could get a dog. Honestly, I think the dog changed my life. With the partnership of Bear, my dog, we walked and walked and walked. I lost weight and wanted to feel healthier, so I ate more vegetables and fruits.
I’ll be honest, until I had my first child, I still wasn’t on top of my food intake.
Luckily, with Munchie, our oldest, I craved Broccoli. I ate an insane amount of broccoli. Which is probably why he absolutely loves it. He is a broccoli connoisseur and will tell you if the broccoli tastes fresh.
With Giggles, I ate a ton of salsa and sour cream. No wonder she likes spicy and dairy. And with Dimples, I fell short. I loved eating chocolate chip cookies, and he does have quite the sweet tooth.
Now that they are older, our children and can make some of their own decisions on food, I feel it is important to model the good eating behaviors. Making sure there is fresh fruit and vegetables available. And, if fresh isn’t always at the ready, frozen will do. We love to make smoothies with frozen fruits and no sugar added. Filling our plates with healthy food encourages the children to do the same.
Having healthy, family dinners regularly is also extremely important in our household. We all sit down at our kitchen table (which doubles as our homeschool desks) and eat together. Cell phones and TVs are off, and our family is focused on nourishing both our bodies and our emotions!
I readily admit that our household isn’t one of perfect health. We have some convenience foods and some prepared food, but we incorporate lots of healthy food into our everyday eating. The easiest thing for us to have plenty of healthy food readily available, with very little junk food in the house.
What do you do to keep your household healthy?
